It all started when…
I am an internet kid and a millennial through and through. I remember grabbing the “free” AOL 4.0 Trial CD-Rom at the checkout line at Target with my mom, dragging a cord from the hallway into our “computer room” so I could clog up our phone line and use the dial-up connection, and spending hours on AOL kid and teen message boards. I began writing “zines” with my friends and even in 7th grade treating it as a job, and making sure I never missed a self-imposed deadline. My mom, who then and now was my biggest fan, let me print every issue out in colored ink and saved them for me. I quit the “zine” life once I hit high school, but remained enraptured with journalism and advertising.
Life happens…
I graduated from Michigan State University [Go Green!] with a degree in Advertising, specializing in public relations. I met my husband while working at Abercrombie & Fitch, a store famous for its branding, and continued to work there and at other large retailers, focusing on community building, team management, and merchandising. For two young twenty-somethings, life seemed to be moving along with our “plan” until 2012. Our oldest had just turned 1 and we were pregnant with our second child. We were told while sitting on cold metal hospital stools, that the baby I was carrying would most likely be stillborn or die shortly after birth. We were 25 years old. Our world stopped, but the rest of the world kept on turning. Our son was born, alive, and we were thrilled, but the next several years were filled with little sleep and hundreds of doctor’s appointments. We had another son two years later, and our family of 5 was complete. I loved being a mother but had given up my career.

Around my 30th birthday, I felt like I had “wasted” my degree and had no idea how to re-enter the workforce. I was also incredibly isolated. Without social media, I would have completely lost touch with my friends. I made new friends on social media, who understood what I was going through as a mother. Social media has a bad rap, but I was beginning to see it was more than glossy brag posts and also a means to stay connected. I had been writing a blog and creating YouTube content for several years, and slowly started doing copywriting work and, finally social media management. It felt like all of my talents, skills, passions finally intersected, and like at 30 I finally knew what I wanted to be when I grew up: A Social Media Marketer. And today I manage social media for clients and provide consulting services so that your company can run successful social media campaigns that connect with your target customer.
